一説では、曹洞宗の最初の寺院。1648年に淀城主の永井尚政が再興。室町時代の七名園の一つ「朝日茶園」の跡地。本堂は伏見城の遺構と伝わる。石門~桜門間の参道「琴坂」は桜と紅葉の名所。国重要文化的景観。毎年10月の「宇治茶まつり」では壺口切の儀茶筅塚供養が行われる。
