吉野山から大峯山山上ケ岳にかけての一帯は、古くは金峯山と称し広く知られた聖域でした。そこに開創された修験道の金峯山寺でしたが、明治に修験道が禁止され、一時期は廃寺となりました。その後復興し、「紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道」の一つとして世界文化遺産に登録されました。
The area from Mt. Yoshino to Mt. Omine and Mt. Kamigatake was a widely known sanctuary called Mount Kinpu in the old days. The Shugendo Kinpusen-ji Temple was founded there, but Shugendo was banned in the Meiji period, and the temple was abandoned for a while. After that, it was reconstructed and registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site as one of the “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountains.”
