吉野川のこのあたりは音無川という別称があり、この川を眼下に望む栄山寺は、古来は前山寺あるいは崎山寺と呼ばれていたと伝えられています。「崎」とは岩が川の瀬に張り出したところ、そこには美しいよどみができ、瀬音が消えます。栄山寺で修行していた弘法大師が筆を投げ入れ静かにさせたという伝承があります。
This area of the Yoshino River is also known as the Otonashi River, and Eizan-ji Temple, which overlooks this river, is said to have been called Zenzan-ji Temple or Sakiyama-ji Temple since ancient times. “Saki” is a place where a rock overhangs the riverside, and a beautiful stagnation forms there, and the sound of the stream disappears. There is a tradition that Kobo Daishi, who was training at Eizan-ji Temple, threw his brush in and made him quiet.
