「羽衣伝説」や「菊石姫伝説」がのこる神秘の湖で、１周約６．４Ｋｍの湖畔には山口誓子や斎部路通などの句碑があり、俳句大会が行われるなど俳諧を楽しむ方が多く訪れています。
四季をとおして美しい湖で、導水路沿いの「余呉川堤の桜」は、菜の花と桜のあざやかな競演が楽しめ、冬季には「ワカサギ釣り」に多くの方が訪れるなど、多くの方の癒しの場となっています。 また、余呉湖まつりや健康マラソン等のイベントもおこなわれ、地域間交流の場となっています。
