約660年続いた斎王制度は、南北朝時代に廃絶し、歴史の中に埋もれてしまいました。
しかしながら、斎宮に住む人々は、先祖代々語り継がれてきた斎王・斎宮の存在を信じ、斎王の御殿があったとされるここ「斎王の森」を大切に守り続けてきました。
今では斎宮跡のシンボルゾーンとして親しまれています。
