福井市の南東約10キロの位置にあり、戦国時代に朝倉氏が5代103年間にわたって越前の国を支配した城下町跡です。当主の館・武家屋敷・寺院・町屋・職人屋敷や道路に至るまで町並みがほぼ完全な姿で発掘。国の特別史跡・特別名勝に指定されています。
It is located about 10 kilometers southeast of Fukui City, and is the site of a castle town where the Asakura clan ruled Echizen Province for 5 generations and 103 years during the Warring States period. The townscape was excavated in almost perfect condition, up to the owner's mansion, samurai houses, temples, townhouses, craftsman's houses, and roads. It has been designated as a national special historic site and special place of scenic beauty.
