The Tamashima River is known for the legend that Empress Jingu predicted military fortune by standing on a stone in the river and fishing for fish during the conquest of the Three Koreans. Since splendid sweetfish were caught at that time, it is also said to be the birthplace of the character for sweetfish. Empress Jingu caught sweetfish with a golden needle, so it is also said that the mouth of sweetfish in the Tamashima River is yellow.
At “Manyoshironseki Park” near Tamashima Shrine, there is a “Tarurin-seki,” which is said to have stood Empress Jingu.
