国生み神話によると、イザナギ、イザナミが、天の浮橋に立って天の瓊矛で青海原をかきまわし、その矛先から落ちた潮が凝り固ってできたのが自凝島（おのころじま）で、二尊はこの島に降り、淡路島をはじめ日本の国土を生んだとされています。
日本三大鳥居の一つといわれる大鳥居（高さ21.7m柱間口12.7m笠木全長31.2m）がみどころ。
