天明3年（西暦1783年）の浅間山の大噴火によって大きな被害を受けた鎌原集落の中で唯一残った建物であり、この観音堂の石段の上に避難した93名のみが助かったとされる、浅間の大噴火を伝える象徴的な施設。公共トイレも併設しています。
